Energy tariffs fluctuate depending on the time of the day and the demand for electricity. If the demand is higher, so are energy tariffs. For most people, the times when tariffs are at their lowest are at impractical times resulting in larger energy bills for using electronics during “peak hours”. Imperial College London wanted to automate the switching of appliances when energy costs change – switching them off when tariffs are high and back on again when they’re reduced.
Imperial College London tested high energy drawing appliances from different locations around the campus switching them on and off based on the live cost of energy. We licenced our cloud, our hardware (WIFIPLUG) and our apps and charged a simple monthly SAAS fee for the data.
